In 1864, Adolphe and Hippolyte Roos arrived in San Francisco from Wissembourg, Alsace — a small French town on the German border, known for its craftsmen and its pride. They came with nothing but a sharp eye for cloth and a belief that the men building California deserved to dress well.
One year later, Adolphe bought out his employer on Leidesdorff Street. Roos Brothers was born. Their younger brother Achille joined them. Six tailors. The finest ready-made clothing in the world — so wrote the San Francisco Chronicle in 1885.
They survived the Gold Rush. They survived the 1906 earthquake — rebuilt immediately, larger and better. They dressed California through two World Wars and the Great Depression. In 1937, their Market Street flagship was called "one of the most beautiful stores in the world."
In 1984, the last store closed. In 2026, the name came home to San Francisco — and the work began again.

The Craft, Step by Step
Eight stages stand between a bolt of cloth and a garment that carries the Roos Brothers label. None of them is optional.
Fabric Sourcing
Cloth is selected mill by mill — Albini in Italy, VBC in Biella, linen from Normandy. Every bolt is traceable to its origin.
Pattern & Tailoring
Patterns are drafted on the California block — a freer shoulder, a cleaner waist — then graded by hand across every size.
Construction
Half-canvas minimum in every jacket. Horsehair canvas in waistbands. Structure that is sewn in, never glued.
Stitching
Single-needle seams throughout — slower to sew, twice as clean, and far stronger where a garment takes its daily strain.
Embroidery
The 1865 mark is embroidered, never printed — a detail you'll find inside the collar and at the hem, where only you will see it.
Quality Inspection
Every garment is inspected twice — once off the line, once before it ships. Buttons, seams, drape, symmetry. No exceptions.
Finishing
A final press by hand, collars shaped, threads trimmed. The last five minutes decide how the first impression lands.
Packaging
Folded over acid-free tissue, sealed with the gold band, boxed in matte black. Opening it should feel like 1865 meeting 2026.

VBC Super 120s
The world's most trusted suiting mill. Super 120s balances luxury softness with practical durability. Our standard for blazers, suits, and trousers.
Melton Wool
Dense, felted, sculptural. The overcoat fabric that defined English tailoring for two centuries. Heavy enough to hold its shape without a frame. The Market Street Overcoat.
Cupro Bemberg
The only lining worth using. Breathes like cotton, slides like silk. Used in every Roos Brothers jacket and coat. In deep burgundy — the brand's interior signature.
European Linen
Flax grown on the Normandy coast, woven for breath and drape. It creases with character and cools like nothing else. Summer, solved.
Merino Wool
Fine-gauge Merino that regulates temperature in both directions. Our knitwear standard — soft against skin, sharp under a blazer.
Premium Piqué
A denser, longer-staple piqué than the polo world is used to. Holds its collar, holds its color, and holds its shape through years of wear.
Japanese Denim
Loom-woven selvedge from Okayama's storied mills. Rigid at first, then molded to you alone. The most personal fabric we cut.
